The Queen's Thief

“He loves me, and I reward his love by forcing on him something he hates. In the evening, after we dance, he rarely returns to the throne; he dances with others or he moves from place to place through the room. The court thinks he is trying to be gracious, sharing his attention. Only I see that he moves always toward the empty spot and the court moves always after him. He is like a dog trying to escape its own tail. He indulged himself in one brief moment of privacy and almost died of it. Relius, he hates being king.”

fergmus:

Yeah, I like Gen’s voice and character, so I did appreciate the first-person narration. It’s interesting that he’s confident partly because he’s a court favourite, not simply because he’s a “cocky urchin” type (which I assumed he was, for most of the book).

I have read a number of books with narrators who are unreliable — but “unreliable” in the postmodernish-antihero-literary-studies way, e.g. Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis’ Dom Casmurro, or Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day. Perhaps I’d just never come across a narrator who’s unreliable because s/he deceives the reader for the sake of a plot twist.

But I think you’re right: if you understand Gen’s character, of course he’d relish withholding crucial information and revealing it with a flourish — even if he’s supposed to be writing a reliable record.

  “Stop whining,” Eugenides said.
“What?” Eddis’ expression shifted from wary to puzzled.
“That was the message. For me, alone among mortals, the gods send their messenger to tell me to stop whining. That’ll teach me to go hide in a temple.”
  “Eugenides—” said Eddis.
“And I thought I was doing fairly well,” he said bitterly.

SO MUCH QUEEN’S THIEF HAPPINESS. I needed a dose of this. I think the next thing that’s in order is to start writing a new fanfic… I’ve done LOTR and Howl’s Moving Castle fanfic for years but I’ve always been terrified of attempting anything in this realm because MWT has such a unique style and voice and if I can’t capture Gen perfectly then I’ll let down the entire world.

I’m sorry if I startled you,” said Attolia softly.
“You didn’t startle me,” said Eugenides. “You scared the hell out of me.”
Attolia’s lips pressed together. “You needn’t admit it out loud,” she reproved him.
“Hard to deny it,” Eugenides answered. Costis could hear him smile.
“Are you badly hurt?”
“Hideously,” said the king, without sounding injured at all. “I am disemboweled. My insides may in an instant become my outsides as I stand here before you, and no one will even notice.” He reached up again to touch her face, trying to wipe away the bloody fingerprints he had left, but only making them worse. “My beautiful queen. Your entire court is staring at you, and I can’t blame them.
